About camping in Jasper National Park

Jasper is the larger, quieter sibling to Banff—Athabasca Glacier views, Maligne Lake boat trips, and dark-sky preserves over the Athabasca River valley. Wapiti and Whistlers campgrounds handle summer demand; backcountry routes reach the Tonquin Valley and Skyline Trail.

Best time to visit

June through September opens high passes; September larch gold in the Tonquin is a highlight. May and October shoulder seasons mean elk rut viewing and fewer tour buses on Icefields Parkway.

Local tips

Fuel and groceries in Jasper town before heading to remote sites. Book Maligne Lake shuttles early. Bear-aware camping is mandatory—elk calving areas near town need extra distance in spring.

Conditions to watch

Wildfire smoke and park closures along Icefields Parkway can disrupt travel. Cold rain at Maligne Lake mimics winter hypothermia risk. Avalanche terrain affects winter access roads.
