About camping in Dolomites
The Dolomiti are pale limestone spires rising above South Tyrol and Belluno—rifugio-linked trekking, via ferrata, and valley agriturismo camping. Elevations jump from apple orchards to 3,000 m summits within a short drive, so weather layers are non-negotiable.
Best time to visit
July and August are peak for high routes; June and September offer stable weather with fewer lift queues. October can close high rifugi; winter is ski-touring and snowshoe season at valley camps.
Local tips
Book rifugi beds and valley camps before Italian Ferragosto. Start summit pushes before 6 a.m. to beat afternoon storms. Carry a headlamp—Sudtirol storms build faster than valley forecasts suggest.
Conditions to watch
Afternoon lightning on exposed ferrata is lethal—descend by early afternoon on thunder days. Rockfall increases after freeze-thaw cycles. Parking limits at popular trailheads like Tre Cime fill before sunrise in August.
